The goal of MPC`s annual meeting is scientific exchange about the latest results and to initiate new projects. Joint research as well as the future of the Centre were discussed by the participants. The overall objective was to start and continue fruitful scientific discussions and research collaborations.

About 70 registered participants, 22 of them from the partner groups in Canada and Mexico, took part in the meeting. In addition to the lectures of the Centre members, numerous junior research groups of the Max Planck Institute for the Science of Light (MPL) and a group of the Friedrich-Alexander-Universität Erlangen-Nürnberg (FAU) presented their topics.

MPL Visiting Fellowship awarded to Robert Boyd 

MPL`s Managing Director Florian Marquardt awarded the title of MPL Visiting Fellow to Professor Robert Boyd in recognition of his great scientific achievements. He is collaborating very actively with several groups at MPL as part of the Centre activities.

Robert Boyd is Canada Excellence Research Chair Laureate in Quantum Nonlinear Optics and Professor of Physics at the University of Ottawa as well as at the University of Rochester. His research interests include studies of “slow” and “fast” light propagation, quantum imaging techniques, nonlinear optical interactions, studies of the nonlinear optical properties of materials, and the development of photonic devices including photonic biosensors.

The Max Planck-uOttawa Centre for Extreme and Quantum Photonics

Following a successful evaluation by the Max Planck Society, the MPC was recently extended for a further five years, initially until 2025.

The Max Planck - uOttawa Centre for Extreme and Quantum Photonics was established in 2015 as a platform for close collaboration and scientific exchange between researchers from uOttawa, the Max Planck Institute for the Science of Light in Erlangen, and the Max Planck Institute for Quantum Optics in Garching.

The Centre has a broad research portfolio encompassing many topics of current interest in optics and photonics. Particular areas of interest include, but are not limited to fundamentals and applications of structured light, nano- and biophotonics, the development of optical methods relevant to quantum information and nanoscience, the study of attosecond phenomena, and the fabrication of devices and novel materials for use in classical and quantum optics.
