DLS talk by Gerard Milburn: "Quantum Learning Machines"
The Distinguished Lecturer Series (DLS) continued in 2025 with the first talk “Quantum Learning Machines” by Gerard Milburn. He is professor at the Sussex Centre for Quantum Technologies and the new UK National Quantum Computing Centre.
Gerard Milburn is well-known for his works in quantum optics, quantum measurement and stochastic processes, atom optics, quantum chaos, mesoscopic electronics, quantum information and quantum computation. He gave an inspiring talk on two new approaches to physical learning machines using quantum technology: mesoscopic electronics and superconducting quantum optics. They are based on different approaches: the first one on physical neural networks and the second on a quantum kernel algorithm with an interesting connection to quantum chaos. Milburn discussed the very important challenges in this field, such as energy efficiency, security and computational efficiency.
The Distinguished Lecturer Series brings leading minds in all fields relevant to the science of light to Erlangen. The speakers present their research to a broad audience, enabling scientific exchange.
