Exploring brain mechanics: FAU Collaborative Research Center (CRC) approved

Within the next four years, the FAU Collaborative Research Center CRC 1540 „Exploring Brain Mechanics“ (EBM) will investigate the origin, as well as the biological and medical implications of the mechanical properties of the central nervous system.

Under the leadership of Prof. Paul Steinmann, Chair of Engineering Mechanics, Friedrich-Alexander-Universität Erlangen-Nürnberg (FAU) two research groups at the Max Planck Institute for the Science of Light (MPL) are also involved in this funded project. Daniel Wehner, research group leader for neuroregeneration at MPL, will investigate the importance of tissue mechanical cues for successful spinal cord regeneration in zebrafish. Dr. Stephanie Möllmert from the Guck division of Biological Optomechanics will use Brillouin microscopy to research the relevant constituents determining the mechanical properties of the zebrafish spinal cord. With Prof. Vasily Zaburdaev (biology) and Prof. Kristian Franze (medicine), two further scientific members of the Max-Planck-Zentrum für Physik und Medizin (MPZPM) are involved with projects in the CRC.
