Job Opportunities at Russell Division

Within Germany there are many opportunities for visitors to spend from a few weeks to a few months or years with us, but only in the context of a strong collaboration. The Max-Planck Society also offers awards for talented young postdoctoral scientists to set up their own independent Max-Planck Research Groups, hosted by a Max-Planck Institute. The Humboldt Foundation offers various awards including Humboldt Fellowships for early-to-mid-stage post-doctoral scientists, and Humboldt Awards - a highly flexible scheme that enables senior scientists to visit us and establish collaborative programmes of research. We always welcome applications from highly-motivated and well-qualified students and scientists interested in getting involved in exciting Masters projects, or postdoctoral research.

Subject to availability, we can offer positions to:

  • Postdoctoral researchers
  • Masters students
  • Work-study students ("HiWi's")

If you are a student looking for a Masters or a PhD position, please consider applying for one of these established programs (note that IMPRS:PL now offers scholarships to outstanding Masters students):

Please note that the Division does not normally offer summer placements.

There is also the possibility of applying for a Herbert Walther Fellowship, which offers the chance to do independent postdoctoral research within the Division. If you want to get involved in cutting-edge research in photonics within a highly collaborative and interdisciplinary environment, please first study the research pages on this website.

If our research interests you, and you would like to explore joining us, please send an email, with your curriculum vitae and a statement of your research interests, to Bettina Schwender at
