The DLS series brings leading minds in all relevant areas of the science of light to Erlangen. The speakers present their research fields to a broad audience and enable scientific exchange.

Prof. Dr. Isabelle Staude, leader of the “Photonic Nanomaterials” group at the Abbe Center of Photonics of the Friedrich Schiller University Jena, conducts research on the use of designed photonic nanostructures which are to control the emission, absorption, and propagation of light at the nanoscale level. Her talk provided an overview of the recent advances in nonlinear, tunable and light-emitting all-dielectric metasurfaces.

Prof. Dr. Tracy Northup is the head of the “Quantum Interfaces” group at the Institute of Experimental Physics at the University of Innsbruck. Researchers are investigating how quantum states can be transferred between light and matter based on the interactions between individual atoms, photons and phonons. These fundamental physics experiments have applications for new quantum technologies and, in particular, for future quantum networks. In her lecture “Levitated nanoparticles: a route to the quantum regime”, Northup presented experimental work with silica nanoparticles in ion traps in which they aim to bring these particles into the quantum regime.
