Better collaboration between PhD students at the MPG: PhDnet participants from Stuttgart visit MPL

Over 30 PhD candidates from the Max Planck Institutes for Intelligent Systems (MPI-IS) and for Solid State Research (MPI-FKF) in Stuttgart visited the Max Planck Institute for the Science of Light (MPL). The meeting was an opportunity for the students to exchange ideas with each other and to get to know other institutes.

The MPL was, of course, happy to accommodate the request from Stuttgart. Carlos Ruiz Gonzalez – a PhD candidate in the Krenn research group and, at the time, MPL representative of the Max Planck-wide doctoral network, PhDnet – organized the visit of around 30 guests together with his fellow researchers at the Institute. Max Planck PhDnet is a platform for exchange between PhD candidates across the Max Planck Society. About 5,000 doctoral students work at the 86 institutes.

At the MPI-FKF, the guests from Baden-Württemberg work on nanophysics, 2D materials with special electronic properties and various aspects of quantum matter. At the MPI-IS, the PhD students conduct research in areas such as robotics and artificial muscles. They also study the interaction mechanisms of plants and try to emulate different biological systems. In the spirit of scientific exchange, the day at MPL began with presentations on the participants’ research areas. After that, lunchtime provided many opportunities for discussion and exchange at lunchtime. Lab tours gave the guests from Stuttgart further insight into the research and experiments at MPL.

"It was an extremely interesting experience for both sides. I hope our guests got a good glimpse of our research and facilities," concludes Carlos Ruiz Gonzalez. "I look forward to future meetings, especially with institutes that work in related fields."

About PhDnet

Max Planck PhDnet is a platform for exchange among the PhD candidates working at the Max Planck Society (MPG). The PhDnet was founded over 20 years ago to improve interdisciplinary cooperation, optimize doctoral education and scientific exchange, and strengthen academic solidarity. There are different work groups that always look for new members. More information can be found here: https://www.phdnet.mpg.de/phdnet/who/workgroups.
