First visit by University of Technology Nuremberg President Prömel at the MPI in Erlangen

The founding President of the University of Technology Nuremberg, Professor Hans Jürgen Prömel, met with the directors of the Max Planck Institute for the Science of Light in Erlangen and other researchers for an initial exchange of ideas. Both sides see great potential for cooperation in fields such as quantum technology, biotechnology and artificial intelligence.

Laser flashes that are a trillionth of a second short, quantum phenomena at the transition between light and sound, complex molecular structures on the surface of cells: Prof. Dr. Dr. h.c. mult. Hans Jürgen Prömel was impressed by the range of cutting-edge research in the three departments and numerous research groups during his first visit to the Max Planck Institute for the Science of Light (MPL).

During the discussion with the directors of the MPL Prof. Dr. Jochen Guck, Prof. Dr. Florian Marquardt and Prof. Vahid Sandoghdar, Ph.D., both sides quickly developed starting points for future cooperation between the University of Technology in neighboring Nuremberg and the institute in Erlangen. As the founding president, Prömel is responsible for the development of the university, which was founded in 2021 and where 6000 people are expected to study one day.

"We should definitely take advantage of the opportunities offered by networking the science locations here in Franconia," Guck explained afterwards. Pooling resources increases the power of research. For example, the MPL has one of the largest clean rooms in northern Bavaria for scientific purposes, in which the smallest silicon structures can be produced for quantum optical experiments, or facilities for the production of complex crystal fibres. At the same time, cooperation opens up more opportunities for students at the University of Technology, to work on exciting research projects. "We are a kind of start-up in the university landscape; the know-how available in the region helps us to quickly bring research and teaching to a top level," added Prömel.

Both sides want to continue the talks and see concrete opportunities for cooperation in areas such as quantum technology, biotech and machine learning.
