Max Planck Institute for the Science of Light honored as DPG Quantum Location
In the context of the International Year of Quantum Science and Technology 2025, the German Physical Society (DPG) designated the Max Planck Institute for the Science of Light (MPL) a “quantum location". These locations are intended to raise public awareness of the scientific, technological, and economic significance of quantum physics.
The DPG honored 100 locations across Germany that have a special connection to quantum physics. The historical occasion for this initiative was the formulation of quantum mechanics in 1925 by Werner Heisenberg, who achieved the decisive breakthrough with the development of matrix mechanics — the first mathematical formulation of modern quantum theory. The selected institutes were invited to register on an interactive online map and identify themselves as “quantum locations” by displaying a building plaque.
MPL’s research at the interface of light and matter addresses, among other things, key questions in quantum science and technology ranging from classical light to quantum light, and from basic research to applications. In this context, the scientists also conduct interdisciplinary research, for example at the interfaces of optics and nanophysics, optics and biophysics, or optics and information processing.
