MPL Support Association highlights the interface between physics and medicine

On November 28, the MPL Support Association (Verein der Freunde und Ehemaligen des Max-Planck-Instituts für die Physik des Lichts e.V. ) hosted its second public event at the Max-Planck-Zentrum für Physik und Medizin (MPZPM). In addition to exclusive insights into the basic research conducted there, the event offered visitors the opportunity to engage in intensive discussions with researchers and association members.

“We always look forward to lively exchanges with the interested public, and the events of the MPL Support Association are the perfect opportunity for this,” says Prof. Florian Marquardt, Managing Director of MPL and Chairman of the Association's Board. Marquardt opened the evening with a brief overview of the research conducted by MPL and MPZPM and explained the tasks of the Friends Association. According to the chairman, the growing membership, especially since the first association meeting in July 2025, is a welcome sign of increasing commitment.

In his scientific overview, he presented current research priorities – from fundamental physical questions in quantum sciences to applications of biophysics findings in the life sciences. He emphasized that this basic research is often conducted in international and multidisciplinary collaborations. The extensive public relations work of the past year was also part of his introduction, as this is closely linked to the mission of the association. This included the movie “Tracing Light,” which was largely filmed at MPL, the activities for the International Day of Light, participation in the Blue Night in Nuremberg, and the Long Night of Science with two locations and a record number of over 2,500 visitors. The national winners of the “Jugend forscht” competition in the field of physics were also guests at MPL in 2025.

In his inspiring lecture “Falten erwünscht” (Wrinkles welcome), Prof. Kristian Franze, head of the “Neuronal Mechanics” Division at MPZPM, presented new findings on the role physical factors play in the development and regeneration of the nervous system, and how measuring them helps to improve our fundamental understanding. Following the lecture, there was an opportunity to tour the MPZPM's research laboratories, including the Core Facility “In Vivo Model Systems”, the Core Facility “Microscopy”, the Core Facility “Cell Culture”, and the laboratories of the independent research groups “Reproductive Mechanobiology” and “Cancer Biomechanics”. Guests were given a rare insight into current biophysical research.

The evening ended with a dinner in a relaxed atmosphere, providing ample opportunity for exchange and networking between the research community and the public.

The next event will take place on Thursday, July 9, 2026.
