For the Winter Semester 2021-2021 we offer a seminar course, together with Kai Schmidt at FAU (and with the assistance of PhD students Nico Bassler and Lea Lenke).

Title: Paradigmatic models in condensed matter physics and quantum optics.

Description: The main idea is to dive in most important concepts and physical phenomena from paradigmatic, often exactly solvable, models in the fields of condensed matter physics as well as quantum optics which are relevant for the theoretical description of systems with light and matter. This includes, amongst others, light-matter interactions, quantum phase transitions and criticality, non-trivial topological properties, superconductivity, and superradiance.

Teaching SS2021

In the summer semester 2021 we are offering a lecture course on "Quantum Physics of Light-Matter Interactions" suitable for final year bachelor, master or PhD students. Topics covered include:

  • fundamental processes of light-matter interactions: spontaneous emission, stimulated emission and absorption
  • open quantum systems: quantum master equations
  • cavity quantum electrodynamics, input-output theory
  • quantum Langevin equations
  • fundamentals of laser, laser cooling
  • ion traps, ion cooling
  • cavity quantum optomechanics
  • subradiance and superradiance
  • quantum optics with molecules

This lecture course is strongly connected to research topics tackled within the consortium TRR 306 "Quantum Cooperativity of Light and Matter" (QuCoLiMa).

Lecture notes  will be continously updated during the semester (and also available via StudOn).

Information

Lecture notes are available online, together with powerpoint slides and Zoom pre-recorded videos for each class at least 2 days before the Q&A session (scheduled every Friday typically from 10 to 11 am). Material will not be posted in StudOn (as there are also external students). First class is the exception as it will take place live on Friday 16.04.2021 from 10 am and consists of a detailed introduction into the topics covered. Last class is on 16.07.2021 (as a review/recap class).

Exercise sessions take place on Tuesdays from 11 to 12 under the supervision of Michael Reitz. Exercise sheets are published online on Tuesday and due on next Tuesday before solutions are presented. The last exercise sheet (11+12) will be discussed on 13.07.2021.

There are two possibilities for taking the exam: first on 30.07.2021 at 3pm (Lecture Hall F or G) and second on 09.08.2021 at 3pm (Lecture Hall G). The exam is 90 mins, written. The final grade will be calculated based on performance on the final written exam and accumulated points from the exercise class. The first two exercise sheets will not be graded.
