IMPRS Block Lecture

We were happy to welcome Prof. Serge Bielawski (Université de Lille, France) at our Max Planck Institute who gave an IMPRS-PL Block Lecture on June 30th and July 1st about "Recent advances in single-shot and real-time measurement techniques, using femtosecond lasers".

There has been an increasing demand for fast recording systems (i.e., of light pulse shapes, microscopy images, evolutions of electric fields with THz bandwidth, optical spectra, etc.) that are capable of single-shot operation. This demand introduces important challenges, especially when the number of recordings per second is high, for instance millions of optical or electric signals (e.g., in photonics and spectroscopy), or millions of image lines per second (in biological applications), and/or when real-time operation is required (such as in particle accelerator operation).
Prof. Serge Bielawski reviewed recent single-shot recording methods that are based on photonic strategies achieving a “conversion” from a space to another: time-to-space or time-to-spectrum conversion (for recording time evolutions), or space-to-time conversion (for recording images), etc. In his lecture, he introduced the basics and fundamentals, especially the dispersive Fourier transform, time-stretch, temporal imaging, and information diversity. Using a selection of examples, he also focused on key parameters to be considered (especially speed, SNR and cost) in the design of such single-shot measurement systems.

Those Block Lectures are obligatory parts of the IMPRS-PL curriculum, but of course every interested scientist at MPL, MPZPM or FAU is invited to attend them.
