Prof Winner’s presentation provides a comprehensive exploration of stem cell biology, beginning with an overview of stem cells, their definitions, classifications, and diverse applications. Delving into embryonic stem cells, she will address their unique characteristics and navigate the ethical landscape surrounding their use. The journey continues to tissue-specific stem cells, unraveling the intricacies of gene regulation, emphasizing the role of transcription factors. Transitioning to induced pluripotent stem cells (iPSCs), she will unravel the reprogramming process, incorporating technological advances like CRISPR/Cas9. Concluding with applications such as disease modeling, this presentation bridges the gap between biology and physics, showcasing the interdisciplinary significance of stem cell research.
The lectures were meant to provide basic biological and medical insight to IMPRS-PM physics students. But also interested students and researchers from the Max Planck Institute for the Science of Light, the IMPRS Physics of Light and the Friedrich Alexander University were invited to attend the talks.
