Probing physical properties of cells to generate biologically relevant models: Brillouin microscopy (for (bio-)medical researchers)

Brillouin microscopy is an optical technique that enables label-free, non-contact quantification of mechanical properties with high spatial and temporal resolution. This lecture will provide a comprehensive understanding of Brillouin microscopy by first revisiting fundamental concepts of mechanics. We will then explore the underlying principles of Brillouin light scattering, discussing its theoretical foundation, experimental implementation, and data interpretation. The technique will be positioned among other methods used to assess mechanical properties, such as indentation methods, highlighting its advantages and limitations. Finally, we will examine applications of Brillouin microscopy in biological systems, from single-cell mechanics to the characterization of tissues and whole organisms.

The lectures are meant to provide basic physical concepts to IMPRS-PM (bio-)medical scientists or vice versa. But also interested students and researchers from the Max Planck Institute for the Science of Light, the IMPRS Physics of Light, the Max-Planck-Zentrum für Physik und Medizin, the Friedrich-Alexander-Universität Erlangen-Nürnberg and the Universitätsklinikum Erlangen are welcome to attend the talks.
