A Doctoral Affairs Officer (DAO) is responsible for supporting the PhD students at MPL. He ensures that students receive the necessary support and guidance throughout their research journey, providing guidance and advice on academic matters, such as FAU regulations or research ethics.
If conflicts between PhD students and their supervisors arise, the first contact person to be involved is the PhD student's co-advisor who is also part of the Thesis Advisory Committee (TAC). However, if an additional independent person is needed to help solve the conflict, the DAO can be contacted. Typically, the DAO will meet with the student to discuss their concerns and assess the situation, gather the information and the nature of the conflict.Afterwards, the DAO will approach the supervisor so as to resolve the issue and improve the student-supervisor relationship. In case the conflict cannot be resolved, the DAO can offer to mediate a meeting between both parties. If the conflict persists, the DAO will involve higher authorities (managing director). Throughout the process, all the discussed information (between student and DAO as well as supervisor and DAO) will remain confidential.

IMPRS Office
The IMPRS Physics from Light to Life is coordinated by the IMPRS Office. Our offices are at the Max Planck Institute for the Science of Light (room A.3.214) and at the Max Planck Zentrum für Physik und Medizin (room 0.206). Besides all administrative matters and issues of public relation, we are responsible for the IMPRS application procedure in regard to Master and PhD candidates. Additionally, we take care of the IMPRSinternship programme, the IMPRSmentoring and the organization of curricular events, workshops and lectures.
We are looking forward to your e-mail or phone call if you have questions about our IMPRS in general or some specific detail, e.g. regarding the application and admission process. If you are already an IMPRS PhD or Master student and run into problems, feel free to approach us - we'll be happy to offer you our support.
