Vernissage - at the Max Planck Institute for the Science of Light

In the light-flooded foyer of the Max Planck Institute for the Science of Light in Erlangen a spherical object hovers, rotating inexorably. One half of its surface dazzling white, the predominant color in the institute, while the other is a dense black.  As the sphere rotates, it gradually takes on the appearance of a black hole at the center of the room. But isn't this physically impossible?

The artwork 'Black Hole Sun' by the artist duo Brunner/Ritz will appear on public display for the first time on this day, only to disappear again on an unspecified date.

Through their collaboration, Johannes Brunner and Raimund Ritz have created an unusual and site-specific work, skillfully responding to the architectural context of the Max Planck Institute in Erlangen.

'Black Hole Sun' plays a central role in the documentary film “Tracing Light” by Thomas Riedelsheimer, in cinemas from this summer. As part of this ambitious project, Riedelsheimer accompanies scientists and artists over two years capturing their collaborative efforts to make various aspects of light comprehensible to the public through experimental and illuminating works.

This symbiosis of physics and art is intended to attrract both science enthusiasts and art lovers to the vernissage!
