International Year of Glass in Erlangen

On Friday, July 1, 2022, within the framework of the Year of Glass, public events such as lectures and demonstrations will be held in the rooms of the Erlangen Max Planck Institute for the Science of Light (MPL) and the Friedrich-Alexander-University of Erlangen-Nuremberg (FAU). Everything starts at MPL from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m., before the event continues from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. in the Technical Faculty of the FAU. There the Erlangen University Hospital (UKER) is also taking part in the events and activities for the international Year of Glass.

In the afternoon, from 2 to 5 p.m., the MPL will open its doors. The scientists of the departments nanooptics, fiber drawing and glass studio as well as quantum Optoacoustics will address the following questions:
Why is glass colored? What do we use glass for that is as thin as a human hair? And what does this have to do with the interaction between light and sound?
In addition, Markus Mader from the Albert Ludwigs University of Freiburg will present his new method, with which he uses 3D printing to form glass rather than plastic.

FAU, together with the University Hospital Erlangen, offers further program points at the Faculty of Technology in Martensstraße 5. From 5 to 9 p.m., the chairs of glass and Ceramics, Photonic Technologies and Biomaterials will give insights into their research. In doing so, they will address, how glass has a memory, how it can be engraved and welded, and what medical applications there are in the body: as bone implants, for example. In addition Clinic 1 (Dental Preservation and Periodontology) will report on how glass is used in dentistry.

Science in passing - Shop windows in Erlangen's City Center

The event on July 1 is not the only opportunity, to learn about this exciting research topic: Since February 18, researchers from the three institutions have been displaying interesting facts on a monthly basis in a window of the opticians' shop on the topic of glass: science in passing, so to speak, for the
passers-by in Erlangen.

The International Year of Glass
