Optomechanics

Optomechanical effects, in which small physical objects are pushed around, trapped or made to resonante by light, are an important topic of research in the Division. We work with particles guided inside hollow and liquid-filled hollow core PCF, glass nanospikes and optically coupled glass nanowebs only a few 100 nm thick but 10s of µm wide and metres long. A particular success has been the use of GHz acoustic resonances in small-core PCF for highly stable passive mode-locking of fibre soliton lasers.
